Did you know that January is Anti-Sex Trafficking Awareness month?
If you follow this blog, you should know by now that all my friends are better at being humans than me. That is one of my finer traits: the ability to manipulate charm smart, talented, saint-like people into friendship. I am cool by association, and totally fine with it.
Many of those lovely human beings are involved in ending modern slavery and human trafficking. If I’m completely honest, the anti-human trafficking movement has always seemed over my head. It’s just so big. Where do you even start? How does someone from Orange County (or America, at all!) even get involved? What can one person really do, anyway?
Fortunately, several of my superhuman friends have helped break it down for me.
For instance, did you know:
- There are more slaves today than at any other time in history. Something like 21-30 million people, actually.
- It’s estimated that around 2 million children are the victims of trafficking every year.
- Modern day slavery brings in more money each year than Nike, Starbucks, and Google combined. (WHAT THE f&$#!!!!!!)
If you’re involved in this movement or looking for a way to learn more, I’ve got good news!
Share & Do Good, one of the most awesome little boutiques in downtown Fullerton, is having an event on January 9th–just for you! They’ve kindly asked me to emcee the event, and I am super excited about it. So, I better see your pretty faces there.
One of my very favorite people, Meredith Galipault, will be sharing stories about her experience designing jewelry in India with the anti-trafficking company, iSanctuary. (Plus, you’ll have an opportunity to purchase some of those pieces and, let me tell you, they’re amazing.)
Not to mention, the jazz singer/songwriter Chelsea Marie Davis will be performing. C’mon. I don’t need to sell anyone on live jazz music.
It’s going to be a great night. Click here for more information, to RSVP in advance, and to share it with your friends!
Looking forward to seeing you there!
